Our Story

Discover Our Journey So Far

CPT is dedicated to highlighting the value and safety of personalized compounded treatments, which are distinct from counterfeit or illicit medications. We believe that through collective advocacy, we can better inform policymakers and patients about the benefits and regulatory standards that safeguard this practice.

Mission

CPT was founded to educate policymakers about the vital role pharmacy compounding plays in ensuring access to medical treatments. We highlight how tailored medications, ordered by licensed prescribers and prepared by regulated compounding pharmacies, are an essential part of treating each patient according to their individual needs. CPT also serves as a trusted voice related to the robust and evolving compounding regulatory landscape. The immense value, benefits, and safety of pharmacy compounding should be widely recognized and supported. We aspire to a future where policymakers and patients better understand personalized compounded treatments and the current regulatory framework’s function and efficacy. CPT will also highlight the distinction of compounded treatments from those that are counterfeit, ineffective, or dangerous medications.

Governance & Operating Principles

The structure will include a Board of Directors of member organizations and an Advisory Board to advise and coordinate on advocacy efforts. The coalition will be governed by consensus as much as possible. Quarterly board meetings will be held to set policy and operational goals with interim meetings and sub-working groups as necessary. Individual members have access at all times to CPT staff to seek information or guidance.

Our work

Key Activities

CPT work focuses on three main areas: educate policymakers and patients, advocate for continued access, and sharing evidence.

Regulatory Standards and Protections

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and state Boards of Pharmacy provide strong, longstanding well-defined regulations to promote safety in pharmacy compounding and protect patients. We believe that federal and state regulations governing pharmacy compounding should continue to oversee compliance and safety while preserving access to compounded treatments.

Value of Pharmacy Compounding

Pharmacy compounding plays a crucial role in modern healthcare by providing treatments tailored to meet the specific needs of individual patients. This practice is particularly valuable in treating conditions where commercially available medications may not suffice due to shortages, dosage requirements, ingredient sensitivities, or formulation alternatives.

Patient Voices

Individuals who rely on compounded treatments have medical needs that range from medication allergy avoidance to weight management to chronic condition and cancer treatment. We share the stories and lived experiences of these patients (and the healthcare providers who prescribe and/or administer compounded treatments) to educate policymakers about the vital role of compounded treatments in their care.

Access to Patient-Centered Care

Compounded medications are prescribed by clinicians who best understand their patients’ medical needs and are compounded by pharmacists in facilities subject to strong regulatory oversight. We advocate in front of Congress, the regulatory and Executive branch-levels, and at the state-level, for policies that maintain access for patients and ensure that providers are continued to be empowered to choose the right treatments for their patients.

Patient Outcomes

Tailoring medications to a patient’s needs and preferences can enhance patient engagement and medication adherence, especially in populations where compliance is challenging.

Patient Safety

Compounding standards and best practices are the foundation of regulatory compliance, patient safety, and quality assurance. Policymakers should understand the impact of these standards on patient safety.
